It is that time of year again, everybody’s favorite time of year, awards ceremony time! Ok, well maybe if you are not up for an award or receiving an eighteen thousand dollar gift basket to present an award this time of year is an endless parade of the privileged that gives them the opportunity to whine in a public forum. Either way it’s here.
Now as a critic, and a minor one at that, I have really nothing to do with any of these ceremonies. Which means that I can pick whomever I want to win whatever category I want and I probably won’t be any more accurate than the rest of the viewing public. But maybe I will. So I will start the season off by giving my picks both of who I think will win the award, and who deserves it. First off is the Golden Globes. I must admit I like the Golden Globes, they honor both television and film and they have categories that reward comedies as well as dramas which so often get passed over during the Oscars. I’ll start with the television categories.
Best Television Series - Drama
I’m not on The Sopranos bandwagon. They used to be inspired but now they have devolved into a one dimensional show. I credit this with the loss of Nancy Marchand who played Tony’s manipulative mother. 24 deserved the award in the past but this year was a bit weak. I’m glad to see that Lost is on the list but I don’t think they have proven themselves to viewers yet. So this year I think the award should go to Nip/Tuck and amazing show from the FX channel. That said The Sopranos will probably win.
Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy
I’m glad to see this category making a rebound in the Reality Television Era. I don’t think there is much competition here, Sex and the City of course is nominated for its swan song and Desperate Housewives had made a big splash, but neither one is as clever or as well written as Arrested Development. The only show that could compete, Curb Your Enthusiasm wasn’t even nominated.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama
While I would like to see Jennifer Garner get this for all of the hard work she has put into Alias this wasn’t her banner year. Joely Richardson got the nod, but being nominated is reward enough often times for shows on other networks. This one will probably go to Mariska Hagitay for the Law & Order spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama
As we saw with Michael Chiklis this is the category to honor great shows on the other cable channels. Thus I think this category is a tossup between Denis Leary for The Shield and Julian McMahon for Nip/Tuck.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
This category is an out with the old in with the new. Sarah Jessica Parker has won this before so it will go to one of the Desperate Housewives, my bet, the comedic Teri Hatcher.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
Interesting nominations in this category from Tony Shaloub, to Charlie Sheen, to Matt Leblanc but to my mind this is a two horse race. Larry David has been a riot on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Jason Bateman is the glue that holds Arrested Development together. It is nice to see these guys getting recognition for two shows with similar senses of humor. Give this one to Jason Bateman this year.
Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
I just can’t abide watching The Lion in Winter without Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn so I will go with The Life and Death of Peter Sellers which I found to be very moving.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
I don’t really know what to do with this one. I guess my gut is that if Hilary Swank is up for motion picture actress as well she probably won’t win this one either. I would give this to the effervescent Blythe Danner for the light Back When We Were Grown Ups.
Best Performance by and Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Same hold true here for Jamie Foxx who will probably win in the motion picture acting category. That leaves William H. Macy and Geoffrey Rush in the forefront. I would give this to Geoffrey Rush for his portrayal of Peter Sellers. Though he does not look much like Sellers he felt like Sellers in the Biopic.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
That title is a tough one to type. This one seems pretty easy. Say goodbye to Drea De Matteo’s Adriana with a shiny award. If Joey continues the way it has, this might be the last one she sees for a while.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
I don’t know enough about many of these but I would have to give it to William Shatner who has played his overblown and over acting persona into gold.
Now, finally, onto the movies.
Best Motion Picture - Drama
This year doesn’t have such a clear cut winner as last year but I would have to go with Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator as a great undertaking well executed. The rest of the films in this category look ready to reap acting awards but no big prize.
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Have I mentioned I like that they acknowledge comedies and musicals? I think that the competition in this category is every bit as deserving as that in the drama category. I have to go with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on this one though I’m not sure why it is a comedy not a drama.
Best Director - Motion Picture
Scorsese has never won an Oscar and winning the Golden Globe would be the first step towards that. Of course Clint Eastwood is always an awards darling, as long as they are not talking acting.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
I have to go with Imelda Staunton in Vera Brake on this one. No I haven’t seen the movie, but it looks like the kind of thing that would appeal to voters. Plus Nicole Kidman and Hilary Swank have already won and the voters don’t take Uma Thurman and Scarlett Johansson seriously yet.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
I’d like to see this one go to Johnny Depp as much for Finding Neverland as for Pirates of the Caribbean from last year. But this will probably go to the equally deserving Don Cheadle who has had a busy year.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Again, I would have to go with Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind though I don’t know how musical or how comedic this film was.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
This category seems all but a lock for Jamie Foxx’s channeling of Ray Charles. Sorry Jim, maybe next year.
Best Foreign Language Film
Probably The Sea Inside but how would I know, these films are more mainstream than the usual foreign language fare but they still aren’t showing anywhere around here.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
I already made a statement about my affection for Katharine Hepburn that said I thought that Cate Blanchett did a great job portraying her in The Aviator, great, but not quite good enough. I have to give this one to Virginia Madsen for Sideways mainly because this is a consolation prize since the film is nominated but won’t win anything else.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Every fiber of my being is screaming for this award to go to David Carradine for Kill Bill Vol. 2, but most likely he will be beaten out by, well anyone. In this case since Jamie Foxx has already won one by my estimation I would give it to Closer’s Clive Owen. This is another consolation prize since Closer won’t win any other awards.
Best Screenplay -Motion Picture
There were a lot of small, intimate stories and biopics to choose from this year. But anyone who sees the brilliance of the Charlie Kaufman story for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and doesn’t vote for them deserves to have their memories erased.
Best Original Score - Motion Picture
My general rule of thumb here would be to vote for John Williams. However, he doesn’t have a score nominated. Clint Eastwood does though which is unexpected. I would have to go with the sweeping music by Howard Shore for The Aviator on this one.
Best Original Song - Motion Picture
I don’t know how to pick this one since this category is comparing apples to oranges in musical styles. I would have to go with Accidentally In Love by the Counting Crows which is a fun and catchy song even if it is structured strangely. Personally the song Believe gets on my nerves and adding one song to Phantom of the Opera hardly seems fair.
